At Chiltern Support and Housing Ltd, we recognise that people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience mental health challenges than the general population. Unfortunately, signs of poor mental health can sometimes be overlooked or misattributed—mistaken for aspects of the individual’s learning disability, physical health, or behaviour that challenges. That’s why we are committed to providing informed, compassionate, and accurate support for individuals living with both learning disabilities and mental health conditions.
Our approach is holistic, person-centred, and led by a strong understanding of the complex interplay between emotional wellbeing, cognitive needs, and overall health.
Through our dedicated support teams—backed by internal clinical and wellbeing specialists—we ensure that staff are equipped to identify, understand, and respond appropriately to changes in emotional or psychological wellbeing. We provide ongoing training in mental health awareness, positive behaviour support, trauma-informed care, and communication strategies, helping our teams create environments where people feel safe, respected, and supported.
We work closely with each individual, their families, and external mental health professionals to:
At Chiltern Support and Housing Ltd, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a full and inclusive life—regardless of the challenges they face. That’s why we use clear, multi-agency risk assessments and personalised strategies to safely support individuals with complex needs, including those at risk of offending, self-harm, or other high-risk behaviours.
When required, we also implement high levels of supervision, ensuring safety is maintained without compromising dignity, autonomy, or inclusion.
Our support teams are trained to use a range of specialist assessment and risk management tools, chosen based on the individual’s needs and circumstances. These may include:
All risk assessments and strategies are carried out in close partnership with the person we support, their families (where appropriate), local authorities, probation services, health professionals, and other safeguarding partners. This collaborative approach ensures that every plan is robust, transparent, and focused on both safety and personal progress.
